When to leave for the airport in Istanbul

The drive to Istanbul Airport and to Sabiha Gökçen from 26 parts of the city at every hour of the day, and how to turn a flight time into a pickup time.

Work back from the flight. Both airports ask you to be at the terminal 3 hours before an international departure and 2 hours before a domestic one. What that leaves you to settle is the drive, and in Istanbul the drive changes a great deal with the hour. From Taksim to Sabiha Gökçen it is 35 minutes at 03:00 and 87 minutes at 18:00.

The two large tables on this page give the drive to each airport from 26 parts of the city, for every hour of an ordinary weekday. Find your area, read across to the hour you will be on the road, and take that figure off the time you need to be at the terminal.

The sum

  1. 01Start from the departure time on your ticket.
  2. 02Take off 3 hours for an international flight, or 2 for a domestic one. That is when to be at the terminal door.
  3. 03Take off the drive for the hour you will be travelling, from the table for your airport.

Here is one, worked through. An international flight leaves Istanbul Airport at 13:00, so you should be at the terminal by 10:00. From Sultanahmet, a car that sets off at 09:00 takes 57 minutes at that hour and arrives at 09:57. A pickup 30 minutes later would arrive after 10:00, so 09:00 is the one to book.

If your airline asks for more time than the airport does, or closes its desks earlier, its figure replaces the second step.

Typical traffic on a weekday, sampled on October 4, 2026, from the centre of each area to the terminal. The slowest hour on each row is highlighted. Not a live forecast.

Istanbul Airport is on the European side. For every area on the table the quickest hour of the day falls at or before 06:00, and 24 of the 26 are at their slowest between 17:00 and 19:00.

From the European side the gap between the best hour and the worst is the smaller one. Taksim runs from 40 minutes to 53, Şişli from 36 to 51, Sultanahmet from 46 to 69.

From the Asian side it is wider, because the run has to cross the Bosphorus before it turns for the airport. From Kadıköy it is 49 minutes at 05:00 and 83 at 18:00. Further east the morning is as slow as the evening: from Maltepe the drive is 93 minutes at 08:00, against 94 at 18:00.

Sabiha Gökçen is on the Asian side, and from the districts next to it the figures barely move: Kartal is 22 to 29 minutes across the whole day, Pendik 19 to 28. Further west on the same shore the evening starts to show. Kadıköy runs from 32 minutes to 70.

From the European side every run crosses the Bosphorus, and the evening crossing is the long one. From Taksim it is 87 minutes at 18:00, against 35 at 03:00. From Esenyurt, in the far west of the city, it is 121 minutes at 17:00. In all, 22 of the 26 areas are at their slowest between 17:00 and 19:00.

The night is the mirror of that. For every area the quickest hour falls at or before 03:00.

Pickup times for common flights

The same sum, done for six international departures from three well-known areas. Each pickup is the latest one that still reaches the terminal 3 hours before the flight. They fall on the hour or the half hour because those are the times the booking page offers.

Early flights and evening flights

An early flight is the easy case. You are on the road while the city is asleep, and the left-hand columns of both tables hold the smallest figures on them.

An evening flight is the hard one. If the sum puts your pickup between 17:00 and 19:00, you are travelling in the slowest hours on both tables. From Taksim to Sabiha Gökçen that is 87 minutes, against 52 at midday.

What the tables cannot know

The figures are typical traffic for a weekday, sampled on October 4, 2026. They are not a forecast for your day. Rain, an accident or a closed road lengthens the drive, and nothing on this page knows about any of them. Weekends were not measured.

If the flight is one you cannot afford to miss, use the slowest figure on your row, the highlighted one, instead of the figure for your own hour. It is the worst an ordinary weekday does.

Each run starts from the centre of its area, so your own address will be a little either side of the figure.

A flight that leaves from the other airport than the one you landed at is a different sum, with a guide of its own: Changing airports in Istanbul.

Booking the car

A transfer to either airport can be booked on this site up to 45 minutes before the pickup. The price is for the vehicle and is fixed when you book; the hour of the day does not change it. The name of each area in the tables leads to its own page, which carries the price from that area to both airports.
